Speaking with the Band!

When talking to the boys in The Blithedale Romance some might be surprised to find the level of professionalism they uphold. At 21 years old, they all have a common outlook for the band and the way they should conduct themselves in situations concerning their music. When I asked drummer, Andy Onorato, in an interview he said that all four members agree that this band is like their job. They all know that if they want to be successful and get signed they have to crack down, work hard and do whatever it takes to show record companies how truly talented they are. This is what sets them apart from other bands only recently starting off, not only are they passionate about their work, but they are professional too.

Looking back on what they've done.

With all of the commotion now with the the release of their new EP "Wanderer" it seems people are forgetting to recognize the past success of The Blithedale Romance. The EP that started it all for them, although they are choosing to move in a new direction musically, should still be recognized. The songs of of the EP "King" are memorable, catchy and exciting. Go to any show that the Blithedale Romance plays and you will find at least 3/4s of the audience singing every word right back to the band. Songs like "They Call Me America" and "Future Plans and Old Mans" are songs that every Blithedale fan will always remember and love.

Reviews of the Band!

After their very successful release show a few music sites have released their opinions and review of the set. Different types of music don't always appeal to everyone, so of course there will be some bad reviews for any band out there. Fortunately, out of all the reviews that were posted about The Blithedale Romance, most of them were positive. People applauded their talent and creativity and most said they saw good things coming for the band. On October 11th 2014, The Blithedale Romance had their album release show at the New Brunswick, NJ venue The Bomb Shelter. The Blithedale Romance plays regularly at the Bomb Shelter and that is where you will find their most loyal fans. From the moment you walk into the basement, where the "stage" is you can feel the excitement the audience gives off. As the band begins to play it is clear that the audience is singing right along with them with great energy. There is a sense of community with underground shows because there isn't thousands of people in a huge auditorium, but instead there was about 150 screaming loyal fans all packed like sardines in this small location. Some may see playing or attending a show like this as undesirable but once you're there you see the charm. With friends surrounding and encouraging them the boys of Bithedale put on an energetic show that not only entertained musically but visually as well.

Many artists choose to make a video of them playing live at a pseudo concert, or a mini story following word for word the lyrics of the song. This is not what the boys of The Blithedale Romance chose to do. Just like every other aspect of their music they chose to take a different approach to their music video. Instead of taking the lyrics of the song and making a video that goes along just like it is being narrated they chose to make a video that is more "big picture". "State of Fear" off there EP titled Wanderer is the first of many videos that tells a story of three characters that the band themselves have created. In the video you see the three characters (played by each member of the band) running around in suits in gas masks in what looks like a desolate area. The characters seem to either be running from or looking for something throughout the span of the video. in the end when they find each other there is a look of almost confusion you feel. In order to find out what happens to these characters it is necessary that you watch their next video when it comes out. The band plans to keep this going for the foreseeable future.

Underground music and unsigned bands are something that is often looked at as sub-par in the music industry. But what people forget is every band starts out unsigned. There is a certain sense of satisfaction to being able to say that you listened to and loved a band before they were even famous. My blog is one dedicated to giving undiscovered music the recognition it deserves, especially music in the alternative rock category. One band I am particularly interested in and will spend a lot of time talking about is The Blithedale Romance. The Blithedale Romance is an alternative rock band that originated in the New Brunswick underground punk scene. Consisting of four members, Rob Graham (lead vocalist/guitar),  Andy Onorato (drummer), Jason Renna (bassist) and Brian Rennwanz (lead guitar) the band is a perfect representation of the quality that can be found in undiscovered music.
